The 2030 deadline for discovering life on Proxima b
In short: In less than six years, humanity may finally answer whether we are alone in the universe. By leveraging a new generation of ground-based engineering, astronomers plan to scan the atmosphere of our closest neighboring exoplanet and identify signs of biological activity within mere hours.
The search for extraterrestrial life is moving from theoretical speculation to high-precision data collection. While we currently lack a universally accepted definition of life, scientists focus on 'biosignatures'—chemical fingerprints in an exoplanet's atmosphere that mirror biological processes on Earth. These include gases like oxygen, carbon dioxide, and methane, as well as potential evidence of photosynthesis or even industrial pollution from technological civilizations.
To detect these signatures, astronomers use a technique called transit spectroscopy. This method analyzes light from an exoplanet as it passes through its atmosphere, splitting the light into a rainbow spectrum that acts like a chemical barcode. While current tools like the James Webb Space Telescope (launched in 2021) are beginning to provide glimpses of these gas mixes, the next leap forward will come from Earth's surface.
The Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), currently under construction at 3,046 meters above sea level in Chile’s Atacama Desert, is designed to be humanity's largest eye on the cosmos. It was born from a compromise; the original 'OverWhelmingly Large Telescope' (OWL) was deemed economically impossible due to its €1.2 billion price tag and 100-meter mirror design. The ELT settles for being 'extremely large' while remaining technically viable.
Simulations of the ELT’s technical parameters suggest that once it becomes fully operational—expected between 2029 and 2030—it will have the power to determine if life exists on Proxima b in just a few hours. This represents a monumental shift from estimating probabilities to potentially confirming biological presence on our nearest stellar neighbor.
