The first active Army officer to command the International Space Station

ISS Cmdr. Wheelock Talks with Military Media · 17:32 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: In 2010, a military officer broke a glass ceiling in orbit. As the first active Army officer to lead the International Space Station, Colonel Doug Wheelock bridged the gap between terrestrial combat experience and the complexities of life in low Earth orbit.

Colonel Doug Wheelock's journey to the International Space Station (ISS) was built on a foundation of elite military aviation and engineering. A graduate of West Point in 1983, he became an Army Aviator in 1984 and spent decades in high-stakes roles, including serving as a combat aviation leader in the Pacific Theater and completing 38 combat missions in Afghanistan. His expertise was further refined through research in hypersonic dynamics and robotics at Georgia Tech, as well as training at the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School.

Wheelock's tenure on the ISS was marked by both leadership and high-risk technical execution. During Expedition 25 in 2010, he served as the station's commander, a role that required managing the complex daily operations of the orbiting laboratory. To repair a broken ammonia pump module, he performed three unscheduled extravehicular activities, highlighting the rigorous technical and physical requirements for space commanders.

Beyond his time in orbit, Wheelock's career illustrates the intersection of military strategy and space exploration. The American United States Army Space and Missile Defense Command – NASA Detachment served as his concluding leadership role. He led the U.S. Currently, he guides the trajectory of lunar missions while co-chairing the NASA Human Landing System Joint Test Panel. He is currently responsible for human-in-the-loop testing on lunar landers and building the training strategy for the Artemis missions, which aim to return humans to the moon safely.
