A cosmic miracle: the galaxy that shouldn't exist

James Webb Discovery Of The “Mother Of All Galaxies” Shakes The Foundations Of Cosmology! · 14:16 · Video: Insane Curiosity · Watch at the source

In short: The James Webb Space Telescope has detected MoM-z14, a galaxy from a time when the universe was just 280 million years old. This discovery is forcing astronomers to rethink the timeline of how the first cosmic structures formed.

MoM-z14 is currently the most distant object known to humanity, with light that has traveled for about 13.5 billion years. It possesses a cosmological redshift of 14.44, meaning its light has been stretched by the expansion of the universe. Despite its age, the galaxy is surprisingly bright and dense, yet practically dust-free.

The discovery challenges existing models because MoM-z14 is roughly 100 times brighter than theoretical studies predicted for that era. Rather than being powered by a massive black hole, the brightness suggests stars were forming at an incredibly high rate. This reveals a universe that was far more complex and active much earlier than scientists previously believed. The research team also identified 'JWST’s Quintet,' a rare merger of at least five galaxies occurring only 800 million years after the Big Bang. This suggests that complex interactions and the redistribution of heavy elements like oxygen were underway much sooner than the expected billion-year mark.
