Could a distant ocean world be teeming with alien life?

James Webb Space Telescope Found Signs Of Alien Life? Incredible New JWST Discovery · 18:03 · Video: Destiny · Watch at the source

In short: The James Webb Space Telescope has detected molecules on a planet 124 light-years away that, on Earth, are primarily produced by living organisms. While not a definitive discovery, these findings represent the most promising hints yet of biological activity outside our solar system.

The focus of this celestial investigation is K2-18b, an exoplanet about eight times as massive as Earth. Located in the habitable zone of a small red star in the constellation Leo, K2-18b was first discovered in 2015. By 2019, observations suggested the planet might be a 'Hycean world'—a world covered in a vast, warm ocean beneath a hydrogen-rich atmosphere. In 2023, researchers used the James Webb Space Telescope's near-infrared instruments to confirm the presence of water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane.

The excitement intensified when researchers used a different instrument—the mid-infrared camera—to detect dimethyl sulphide (DMS) and dimethyl disulphide (DMDS). On Earth, these sulfur-based gases are generally found at concentrations below one part per billion by volume and are produced mainly by marine phytoplankton. On K2-18b, however, these molecules are estimated to be thousands of times stronger, exceeding ten parts per million. Because these molecules are predicted to be biosignatures, their presence suggests a scenario where an ocean might be teeming with life.

Despite the enthusiasm, the scientific community maintains a stance of deep skepticism. The detection currently sits at a three-sigma level of statistical significance, meaning there is a 3-in-1000 chance the data is a fluke. In physics, the standard for a 'true' discovery is five sigma (a 1-in-3.5 million chance). Researchers emphasize that unknown chemical processes could still produce these gases non-biologically. Further theoretical and experimental work is required to rule out these possibilities before claiming a definitive discovery of life.

This search highlights the power of the James Webb Space Telescope, which has made significant progress in less than two years of operation. While we cannot yet confirm the existence of extraterrestrial life, the ability to detect specific chemical signatures in the atmospheres of distant worlds marks a profound step forward in answering whether we are alone in the universe.
