Mapping the cosmos from our backyard to a billion light years away
In short: Experience a high-speed visual journey through the architecture of the universe. This animation uses real data to bridge the gap between Earth and the furthest reaches of space.
The journey begins at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, highlighting over 25 years of contributions to large-scale sky surveys. It utilizes data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), which began regular operations in 2000 after a decade of construction. By merging data from the past two decades, this partnership has generated unprecedented 3D cosmic charts, encompassing over 3 million celestial bodies' spectra and multi-hued imagery of a third of the heavens.
The tour provides a visceral look at cosmic structures, including a red giant orbiting a black hole with its accretion disk, a spiral galaxy resembling our Milky Way, and a massive black hole featuring powerful jets. These visualizations represent the culmination of decades of research involving facilities in New Mexico, Chile, and Arizona.
