Peering Through the Veil: How Juno Unlocks Jupiter's Hidden Interior

Juno Mission Holds Key to Solar System's Origins · 35:43 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: Jupiter is a fortress of clouds and radiation, concealing secrets about our solar system's birth. For decades, scientists could only guess what lay beneath its atmosphere. Now, NASA’s Juno spacecraft is piercing that veil to reveal the internal mechanics of the gas giant.

To understand how our solar system formed, scientists must look at Jupiter. As a primary architect of the early neighborhood, the gas giant holds critical clues about planetary origins. However, its thick atmosphere and intense radiation fields have historically acted as a barrier to direct observation. The Juno mission was designed specifically to bypass these obstacles by orbiting the planet's poles 33 times, allowing for a detailed study of its interior, atmosphere, and auroras.

The journey to this data was grueling. Juno endured a five-year transit covering 1.7 billion miles (2.8 billion kilometers) from Earth. Upon arrival on July 4, 2016, the spacecraft had to perform an intricate series of orbital insertion maneuvers that were high-risk; any error could have ended the mission immediately. Once in orbit, Juno became the first solar-powered spacecraft to operate at such a distance from the Sun, successfully navigating some of the most punishing radiation environments in the known universe.

The results have already begun to reshape planetary science. In its first 53-day orbit, Juno revealed vast, previously unseen storm networks swirling around the poles and provided answers to a decades-old mystery regarding winds that extend hundreds of miles into the planet's interior. Beyond Jupiter itself, the mission has documented active volcanoes and lava lakes on the moon Io. These discoveries provide a clearer picture of the dynamic processes shaping our celestial backyard, with the mission scheduled to continue its investigation through September 2025.
