A five-year journey to unlock the secrets of our solar system
In short: NASA's Juno spacecraft has officially entered orbit around Jupiter. This milestone marks the beginning of a deep dive into the planet's history to understand how our own solar system formed.
After traveling for nearly five years, Juno successfully reached Jupiter on July 4, 2016. The spacecraft performed a complex series of maneuvers to settle into orbit, a feat comparable to the Curiosity rover's arrival on Mars.
The mission aims to investigate Jupiter's origin and evolution. By studying this gas giant, scientists hope to gain insights into the role large planets play in the formation of solar systems, including our own. Following the orbital insertion, teams will spend months testing subsystems and gathering preliminary data.
