Planets may survive the violent death of their host stars
In short: When a star dies, it typically consumes everything in its path. However, new observations from the James Webb Space Telescope suggest that planets can endure this stellar apocalypse. By reconstructing the orbital history of a distant gas giant, astronomers have discovered a surprising path to survival.
The discovery centers on WD1856b, a gas giant located approximately 80 light-years from Earth. This celestial body creates a spatial contradiction: weighing four to 11 times Jupiter's mass, it circles a white dwarf—a compact, Earth-sized leftover from a star that finished its fuel. Because white dwarfs are the final stage of stellar evolution for sun-like stars, the existence of WD1856b raised urgent questions about how a planet could survive such a violent transition.
Data from the James Webb Space Telescope, specifically using the MIRI and NIRSpec instruments, allowed researchers to analyze the planet's atmosphere, mass, and temperature. The study, published in the journal Nature, reconstructed the planet's journey and revealed a surprising timeline. Rather than being swallowed during the star's death, the planet originally orbited at a safe distance. It only migrated toward its dead companion billions of years after the star had already transitioned into a white dwarf.
This finding shifts our understanding of planetary dynamics. It suggests that the final fates of planetary systems are not always immediate destruction. Regarding our own solar system, which faces the Sun's demise in about five billion years, this finding expands the potential for where and when life-sustaining worlds could endure. It proves that planets can survive into the final stages of a stellar life cycle, potentially remaining in the universe long after their parent stars have vanished.
