The universe grew up much faster than we ever imagined
In short: For decades, astronomers believed the early universe was a chaotic nursery of messy, irregular shapes. But the James Webb Space Telescope is revealing a different story: smooth, structured spiral galaxies were already taking shape much sooner than our models predicted, challenging our entire timeline of cosmic evolution.
For over 30 years, the scientific consensus was that galaxies formed through violent, frequent mergers shortly after the Big Bang, approximately 13.7 billion years ago. Because of these constant collisions, it was believed that delicate structures like spiral arms, bars, and rings were too fragile to form until at least six billion years after the Big Bang. Previous data from the Hubble Space Telescope largely supported this, showing early galaxies as irregular and disorganized.
New data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is overturning this narrative. Examination of approximately 4,000 galaxies—representing the most extensive survey ever conducted—revealed that distinct disk-shaped galaxies existed merely 3.7 billion years following the Big Bang. This suggests that galactic structures matured much faster than anticipated, appearing almost at the beginning of the universe's timeline.
However, the picture is nuanced. While some galaxies were already structured, other studies of galaxies between 800 million and 1.5 billion years old show they were often 'clumpy' and turbulent. These younger systems were still struggling to settle into smooth rotation due to intense star formation and gravitational instabilities. This suggests a complex transition period where some galaxies reached maturity rapidly while others remained chaotic, forcing astronomers to rethink how galaxies evolved over the last 10 billion years.
The mystery deepens with new findings on galaxy mass. Some massive early galaxies may contain three to four times more mass than previously estimated, hidden in populations of small, faint stars that were nearly impossible to detect with older instruments. These discoveries collectively suggest that the early universe was far more productive and organized than our current theories can easily explain.
