The cosmic web: the invisible scaffolding of our entire universe
In short: The universe isn't just a collection of isolated galaxies. It is organized into a gargantuan, interconnected framework known as the cosmic web. This vast scaffolding of gas, stars, and dark matter dictates how everything in existence is arranged, from the smallest clusters to the largest voids.
The cosmic web represents the most expansive architecture currently identified. It serves as the universe's skeleton, composed of a complex network of gas filaments, stars, and sheets of dark matter. This structure traces the large-scale organization of the cosmos, showing how galaxies have evolved and moved together since the universe's infancy approximately 13 billion years ago.
Recent observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have allowed astronomers to create the most detailed map of this web to date. By mapping these filaments and voids, scientists can see how galaxies fall into these structures. This provides a clearer picture of the universe's development, moving beyond individual objects to see the overarching architecture of space.
A key component of this structure is dark matter, which remains invisible but exerts a powerful gravitational influence. For example, the galaxy cluster XLSSC 122, located about 10.4 billion light-years away, shows an unusually dense concentration of this matter. Since it exhibits a scale and order usually found in the contemporary universe, it implies that certain celestial formations might have formed far more rapidly than existing theories suggest.
Researchers frequently utilise gravitational lensing to analyse these formations, a process where light from remote bodies is warped by the pull of a heavy cluster. By analyzing these distortions, researchers can measure the distribution of invisible mass. Such results are especially noteworthy during 'cosmic noon'—approximately 10 billion years ago—an epoch of peak stellar creation where galaxies manufactured stars at speeds reaching 100 times current levels.
