The slow, calculated art of interplanetary escape
In short: Leaving orbit for a distant destination is rarely a single, dramatic event. This video follows the multi-hour process of executing precise burns to maximize fuel efficiency during a mission to Eve.
Scott Manley demonstrates the patience required for interplanetary travel, utilizing multiple orbits to leverage the Oberth effect for maximum fuel efficiency. The escape process spanned approximately four hours, much of which involved automated burns.
The journey also highlights the unpredictability of orbital mechanics; an error in estimating the transfer window necessitated a last-minute adjustment using the Mun, a maneuver that rarely serves a logical purpose for interplanetary trajectories.
