The 1 in 45 chance: Tracking a potential city-killer asteroid
In short: Astronomers have detected a celestial fragment measuring roughly as tall as a 15-storey tower. While it could theoretically level a city, its path is being narrowed by scientists who are turning orbital mechanics into a high-stakes game of cosmic hide-and-seek.
Discovered in late 2024 by the ATLAS system in Chile, asteroid 2024 YR4 (or simply YR4) is an Apollo-type near-Earth object. It measures between 40 and 90 meters across—roughly 130 to 300 feet. Because asteroids are dark and reflect little light, they are notoriously difficult to track until they are relatively close to Earth. This makes early data collection a race against time for agencies like NASA and the European Space Agency.
The threat level of YR4 has fluctuated wildly as more data points arrive. At one point, its chance of hitting Earth on December 22, 2032, was estimated at 1 in 31 (about 3.1%). However, recent observations have since reduced that probability to approximately 1.5%. While this is a significant drop, the object remains an official concern because its impact risk stays above the 1% threshold. It currently sits at level 3 on the Torino Scale, which is reserved for events capable of causing localized damage.
The 'city-killer' label stems from potential physics: if YR4 hit a city directly at the right angle, it could detonate with the force of 400 Hiroshimas and Nagasakis. However, experts caution that not all impacts are cataclysmic; many objects explode in the atmosphere before reaching the surface. Scientists must now account for tiny variables—like the gravitational pull of Jupiter or passes by other asteroids—to refine these estimates as YR4 continues its journey through our neighborhood.
