How NASA plans to scout the ideal locations for human Mars missions
In short: Discover how NASA is organizing a specialized workshop to identify safe landing zones and exploration areas on the Red Planet for future human crews.
NASA's intentions for the Mars Surface Human Mission Landing Site/Exploration Zone Workshop were disclosed on 25 June 2015. The Houston-based Lunar and Planetary Institute will host this gathering from 27–30 October to solicit ideas regarding Martian territories possessing optimal scientific and physical qualities for human habitation.
The goal is to find areas where humans can safely land, live, and work. Once these potential exploration zones are selected, NASA intends to use the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and Mars Odyssey spacecraft to capture higher-resolution imagery, creating detailed maps essential for mission planning.
