How high-schoolers navigate robots through a mock-up space station
In short: This video captures a live connection between ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano and finalists of the Volare Space Robotics Challenge, where students test remote-controlled robots in a simulated space environment.
Seven high-school squads participated in the Volare Space Robotics Challenge finals, navigating remote-controlled bots across an International Space Station replica. The mission required students to unload cargo from the Automated Transfer Vehicle as quickly as possible while navigating around various objects.
Operating from a nearby control centre, students acted as 'ground control' by providing wireless instructions to their robots. The competition, which lasted two days, also included strategic multipliers and offered participants the chance to visit ESA's laboratories.
