A Dutch orchestra sent a symphony to the International Space Station
In short: When an orchestra in Aarlanderveen performed Gustav Holst's Jupiter hymn, they weren't just playing for a local audience. They were sending a musical gift across the vacuum of space to a man orbiting Earth, bridging the gap between a snowy Dutch field and the International Space Station.
On February 11, 2012, the 42-piece DSS Aarlanderveen orchestra performed a special tribute during their annual 'Wish concert' (Wensconcert). Based near Alphen aan den Rijn in the Netherlands, the ensemble has been performing musical requests for fifteen years. While they typically fulfill requests from Dutch celebrities, this year organizer Edwin Hijman decided to dedicate their entire 'wish spot' to astronaut André Kuipers.
The selection process was deliberate. The orchestra initially considered a theme from the film Apollo 13 by James Horner because of Kuipers' interest in film soundtracks. However, they pivoted to find something more personal on his playlist: the Jupiter hymn from Gustav Holst's 'The Planets' suite. A video message for the European Space Agency (ESA) was captured by the ensemble under Danny Oosterman, a notable Dutch educator and musician associated with both the Utrechts Conservatorium and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
The connection was realized when Kuipers received the message from the International Space Station. He expressed his honor in a broadcast, noting that he had the music with him 'up here.' The performance served as a unique cultural bridge, allowing a community in the Netherlands to offer an ode to a resident of low Earth orbit, turning a local concert into a shared moment of international and interplanetary appreciation.
The DSS Aarlanderveen orchestra itself has a long history, having been founded in 1927. Their participation in the Wensconcert highlights how traditional cultural institutions can use modern technology to reach beyond their immediate surroundings, connecting rural Dutch landscapes with the frontiers of space exploration.
