A celestial symphony reaches the International Space Station

Orchestra plays an inspiring tribute to ESA's André Kuipers · 3:56 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: Watch how a 42-piece orchestra bridged the gap between Earth and orbit to honor a Dutch astronaut. This performance highlights a unique cultural exchange where classical music meets the vacuum of space.

During the yearly 'Wish concert' on 11 February 2012, the DSS Aarlanderveen orchestra honoured astronaut André Kuipers with a unique tribute. Although Dutch celebrities usually provide the requests, the group opted to play the 'Jupiter hymn' from Holst's 'The Planets' suite, a piece beloved by Kuipers, for the occasion.

The performance was led by conductor Danny Oosterman. Following the music, the audience heard a recorded message from Kuipers aboard the International Space Station (ISS), where he expressed his honor in receiving the dedication from such a distance.
