How NASA engineers turned a coffee chat into a global medical solution

When the pandemic created a critical shortage of hospital ventilators, engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory pivoted from spacecraft to medical hardware. This talk details the rapid development of VITAL, a breathing aid designed to support critically ill patients and address global supply gaps.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, JPL spacecraft engineers collaborated with medical experts to create VITAL, which stands for Ventilator Intervention Technology Accessible Locally. The project began as a casual conversation over morning coffee and evolved into a functional, life-saving machine.

Led by Dr. Stacey Boland, the team developed the technology to bolster scarce stocks of traditional hospital ventilators. The resulting design proved so effective that it has been licensed for use in 42 countries.
