How NASA engineers pivoted from space robots to life-saving ventilators in 37 days

Dan Goods: How NASA invented a ventilator for COVID-19 ... in 37 days · 7:46 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: When the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a global ventilator shortage, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory stepped in. By applying their expertise in rapid prototyping and rigorous testing, they developed a new medical device in just over a month to support medical communities facing unprecedented demand.

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the medical community faced a critical shortage of traditional ventilators. To address this, engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California shifted their focus from designing spacecraft and exploring robots to developing medical technology. This pivot was driven by a sense of duty to apply their specialized engineering ingenuity to a global crisis. The result was a prototype known as VITAL (Ventilator Intervention Technology Accessible Locally).

The VITAL ventilator was designed to be built more quickly and maintained more easily than conventional models. Its design utilizes significantly fewer parts, many of which can be sourced through existing supply chains. This flexibility is crucial; the device can be modified for use in high-capacity settings like hotels or convention centers that were being converted into field hospitals. The goal was to free up the limited supply of standard ventilators for patients with the most severe symptoms.

Researchers at New York's Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, a primary US hub for the virus, conducted intense trials on the prototype. Dr. Matthew Levin, an associate professor and director of innovation at the school's Human Simulation Lab, noted that the NASA prototype performed as expected across various simulated patient conditions. Following these successful tests, NASA sought expedited FDA approval via an emergency use authorization to bring the technology to the medical field more rapidly.
