How NASA's spacecraft engineers pivoted to life-saving ventilators in just 37 days
In short: When the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a global shortage of medical equipment, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory stepped in. Moving from designing space-exploring robots to engineering a high-pressure ventilator, these specialists applied their expertise in rapid prototyping to help address the critical need for medical devices during a global crisis.
At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the medical community faced a severe shortage of traditional ventilators. To help preserve the limited supply for patients with the most severe symptoms, engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California developed a new prototype. This device, named VITAL (Ventilator Intervention Technology Accessible Locally), was designed to be built faster and maintained more easily than standard models, utilizing fewer parts that were already available through existing supply chains.
The development process was remarkably swift; the JPL team created the high-pressure ventilator prototype in only 37 days. Despite JPL Director Michael Watkins noting that the agency specializes in spacecraft rather than medical-device manufacturing, the team leveraged their core strengths in rigorous testing and rapid prototyping to meet the crisis. The goal was to create a flexible design capable of being used in various settings, from hospitals to field hospitals in convention centers and hotels.
Researchers at New York's Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai's Human Simulation Lab received a prototype to verify its medical compliance. Testing conducted there showed that the VITAL prototype performed as expected across a wide variety of simulated patient conditions. Following these successful tests, NASA sought expedited FDA approval through an emergency use authorization, a process designed to provide fast-track approval in crisis situations.
This pivot from space exploration to medical support highlights how specialized engineering skills can be redirected to address urgent humanitarian needs. By focusing on accessibility and ease of maintenance, the VITAL project aimed to provide a scalable solution for both the United States and the global community.
