Mars hides an ocean of water, but it is out of reach

Nasa Has Found Oceans Of Water On Mars But There’s A Problem · 14:44 · Video: Insane Curiosity · Watch at the source

In short: NASA has confirmed that Mars contains a massive subsurface reservoir of liquid water. This hidden supply is large enough to flood the entire planet with a mile-deep ocean. However, while this discovery solves a centuries-old mystery, it presents a daunting physical barrier for future human exploration.

Geophysicists using seismic data from NASA's Insight lander have identified a vast reservoir of liquid water trapped within the Martian crust. This water is not in a single open pool but is saturated within the tiny cracks and pores of fractured igneous rock—similar to the granite found in Earth's Sierra Nevada mountains. Situated at depths of 11.5 to 20 kilometres (7 to 13 miles) beneath the exterior, this reservoir sits within the central crust.

The sheer volume of this groundwater is staggering. Scientists estimate it is sufficient to cover the entire surface of Mars to a depth of 1 to 2 kilometers (about a mile). This amount exceeds the volume of the hypothesized ancient oceans that once covered the planet more than 3 billion years ago. The discovery provides a vital link to Mars' geological past, showing that while the surface became cold and barren as the atmosphere thinned, the planet's interior retained its water.

Despite its abundance, the water is practically inaccessible for human use. Drilling to depths of 11.5 to 20 kilometers would be an extreme engineering challenge, even on Earth. While the reservoir marks a promising location to search for ancient or extant life, it remains a geological treasure rather than a practical resource for a future colony. The find shifts the scientific focus from 'where is the water' to 'how did it get there' and 'could life have survived in these deep, wet fractures?'
