Mars may have hidden oceans and underground life-supporting habitats

In short: For years, we viewed Mars as a dry, dead desert. New data suggests a much more complex reality. From massive subsurface oceans to hidden groundwater systems that preserved minerals for billions of years, the Red Planet might have been a sanctuary for life far longer than we ever imagined.

Mars is undergoing a scientific re-evaluation. In March 2025, data from NASA's InSight lander—which has been monitoring the planet's interior since 2018—revealed unmistakable seismic signatures of a massive subsurface ocean. This body of water is estimated to lie approximately 10 to 20 kilometers beneath the Martian surface, potentially rewriting planetary science textbooks regarding the planet's current state.

Beyond these deep oceans, researchers at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) have identified evidence of much shallower, ancient groundwater systems. By analyzing sand dunes in Gale Crater—an area visited by the Curiosity rover—scientists found that dunes slowly hardened into rock billions of years ago. Tiny cracks allowed moisture from adjacent peaks to filter into the dunes, mirroring geological structures seen within United Arab Emirates deserts.

This underground movement of water left behind specific minerals, such as gypsum. Scientists value these substances for their ability to retain and protect remnants of organic matter. The research suggests that Mars did not simply transition from a wet world to a dry one; instead, small amounts of water continued to move underground long after surface lakes and rivers vanished.

These findings shift the search for extraterrestrial life. Rather than looking only at the surface, scientists now view these protected subsurface environments as primary targets. These habitats may have provided the necessary conditions to support microscopic life for billions of years, offering a more enduring timeline for Martian habitability than previously believed.
