Mapping the lunar highlands with unprecedented detail and clarity

NASA | HD Lunar Flyover of the First Images from the LRO Camera · 3:39 · Video: NASA Goddard · Watch at the source

In short: This video provides a high-definition flyover of the Moon's surface using the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter's camera. You can observe the stark landscape of the lunar highlands and identify small features that reveal the Moon's complex geological history.

The footage showcases a region situated a few kilometers east of the Hell E crater. This area lies on the floor of the ancient Deslandres impact structure, which dates back to the Imbrian age and is located in the lunar highlands south of Mare Nubium. The high-resolution NAC images allow for the identification of small features, including several small crater chains and secondary craters. The extreme lighting highlights distinctive lineations caused by ejecta from a nearby impact, making features as small as a few meters discernible across a 3.5-kilometer image width.
