NASA is completing a major power upgrade for the International Space Station this autumn
In short: As the International Space Station approaches its final operational years, NASA is executing a critical power boost. By installing two final roll-out solar arrays, the agency will increase the station's total electrical capacity by nearly a third, ensuring the facility remains fully powered for its eventual controlled deorbit and retirement.
The International Space Station is currently undergoing a significant hardware upgrade to its electrical power system. NASA has scheduled two upcoming extravehicular activities, designated as U.S. spacewalks 100 and 101, to finalize the installation of the International Space Station Roll-Out Solar Array (IROSA) units. These operations, performed by astronauts Anil Menon and Joshua Kutryk, will target the 2A and 3B electrical power channels respectively. These missions mark the 285th and 286th spacewalks conducted specifically for the assembly, maintenance, and ongoing improvement of the station.
The installation of these final two arrays is a pivotal moment for the station's infrastructure. Once the eighth and final IROSA is deployed, the total number of roll-out arrays will reach eight. This expansion is designed to boost the station's available power by up to 30 percent. In concrete terms, this upgrade will raise the facility's electric power generation capacity from its current 160 kilowatts to approximately 215 kilowatts. This increased energy availability is essential for supporting critical station operations, including the complex technical requirements for the station's eventual safe and controlled deorbit.
These missions follow a long history of maintenance and assembly efforts that have defined the station's lifespan. While past efforts have included record-breaking spacewalks, such as the 164th event which ranked as the third longest in history, the current focus is squarely on power augmentation. By finalizing the power system now, NASA ensures that the station remains robust and capable of supporting its research mission until the end of its service life. The upcoming spacewalks, scheduled for late October and early November 2026, represent the culmination of years of power system enhancements.
