From Mars Rovers to Presidential Parades: NASA's Journey on Parade
In short: Watch how NASA showcased the future of deep-space exploration during a historic 2013 presidential inauguration. This footage captures the transition from robotic exploration to human voyages beyond Earth orbit.
On January 21, 2013, NASA featured full-size models of two landmark vehicles in the Washington, D.C. inaugural parade: the Curiosity Mars rover and the Orion space capsule. While Curiosity represents our robotic reach to the Red Planet, Orion is designed as a multi-purpose capsule intended to carry astronauts farther into space than ever before.
The display was accompanied by key figures from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and high-ranking administrators for Education and Science. To emphasise the people involved in these technical achievements, the roster featured several past and present space travellers, namely Kjell Lindgren, Lee Morin, Mike Massimino, Kate Rubins, Serena Aunon, and Alvin Drew.
