NASA tracks massive ice rifts and atmospheric waves

NASA | The Hunt for P.I.G. in October · 3:22 · Video: NASA Goddard · Watch at the source

In short: From the shifting glaciers of Antarctica to the mysterious atmospheric patterns of Saturn, NASA is capturing some of our solar system's most dynamic movements. This video explores high-priority missions measuring polar ice and the discovery of new planetary features.

NASA's Operation IceBridge is currently conducting a 2012 campaign to measure polar ice. The team is operating from a base in the Strait of Magellan to conduct high-priority missions, including a return visit to the Pine Island Glacier. This specific site gained attention last year following the discovery of a massive rift in the ice.

Beyond our planet, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope recently identified a ten-sided atmospheric wave encircling Saturn's south pole. This discovery is significant because it provides a rare opportunity to observe a developing giant atmospheric pattern, contrasting with the well-known hexagon-shaped jet stream at the planet's north pole.
