In short: On April 30, 2013, the Bank of Canada achieved a global milestone by unveiling a new banknote from the International Space Station. This wasn't just a publicity stunt; it was a high-tech debut of a polymer note designed to represent the frontiers of both the country and the planet.

The unveiling was led by Chris Hadfield, the first Canadian commander of the International Space Station and the first Canadian to walk in space in 2001. During a live broadcast, Hadfield showcased the new $5 bill, which features the Canadarm2 robotic arm and the Dextre manipulator. These specific tools were instrumental in constructing and maintaining the orbital laboratory, serving as symbols of Canada's ongoing contributions to international space exploration.

Technologically, the new $5 and $10 notes represent a significant shift for the Bank of Canada. Utilising a polymer material, these notes feature holographic and transparent details, rendering them the bank's highest-security issue to date. These polymer notes are engineered to be more economical than traditional cotton-based paper, with an estimated lifespan at least two and a half times longer. They are also designed to be recyclable within Canada.

The design of the $5 note balances history with future ambition. While the reverse side celebrates space exploration—featuring a spacewalking astronaut identified as Canadian by a maple-leaf flag—the front retains a portrait of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, who served as Prime Minister from 1896 to 1911. This transition from the previous $5 bill, which depicted winter sports, to a space-themed note was intended to inspire the next generation to aim for new heights of innovation.

This event marked a first for the Bank of Canada, which had previously featured Hadfield on coins released in 2006. The new notes were scheduled to enter public circulation in November 2013, following the orbital ceremony attended by dignitaries including Finance Minister James Flaherty and Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney.
