From Oneonta to Orbit: A Full Circle Journey for a Space Engineer
In short: In 2011, students from Otsego County looked up at the International Space Station and spoke directly to one of its inhabitants. The man on the other end wasn't just any astronaut; he was an alumnus of the very district where the children were sitting.
On June 17, 2011, students in grades five through eight from the Oneonta City School District engaged in a live call with Expedition 28 Flight Engineer Ron Garan. The interaction served as a bridge between local education and global exploration, focusing on how the International Space Station (ISS) expands human understanding of our planet and the cosmos beyond.
Garan felt a profound link to this, having graduated from Oneonta campus of The State University of New York during 1982. This specific engagement followed a series of interactions where Garan had previously used NASA’s Digital Learning Network to discuss the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and his personal experiences during his first spaceflight.
These types of educational initiatives are part of NASA's Next Gen STEM project. For nearly 23 years, astronauts have maintained a continuous presence on the ISS, performing science and testing technologies that benefit life on Earth while preparing for deep-space missions like Artemis. These projects aim to inspire the 'Artemis Generation,' ensuring continued leadership in space discovery by connecting current students with the pioneers of tomorrow.
Communication between these orbiting laboratories and NASA's Mission Control Center in Houston is facilitated 24 hours a day via the Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) Near Space Network. By providing direct access to astronauts, NASA aims to ground complex orbital research in relatable human experiences for the next generation of explorers.
