The next crew is preparing to launch toward the International Space Station

Next Space Station Crew Discusses Mission · 50:44 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: As the International Space Station enters its third decade of continuous human occupation, a new group of explorers is preparing to join the station. This upcoming mission aims to push the boundaries of science, conducting hundreds of experiments designed to benefit life on Earth and prepare for the long journey to Mars.

The upcoming mission features a diverse international team, including NASA astronaut Tim Kopra, European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Timothy Peake, and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko. This crew is scheduled to launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on December 15 aboard a Soyuz spacecraft. Following their departure from Earth, they are currently slated to return to our planet in May 2016.

While one crew prepares for launch, another is already working to advance human knowledge. The SpaceX Crew-12 mission, consisting of NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev, is currently aboard the station. Their work involves hundreds of experiments intended to facilitate human exploration beyond low Earth orbit. This research includes studying bacteria that cause pneumonia to improve cardiovascular treatments, investigating on-demand intravenous fluid generation for future missions, and examining how physical characteristics influence blood flow during spaceflight.

The International Space Station has been continuously inhabited for more than 25 years, serving as a vital laboratory for breakthroughs impossible to achieve on Earth. These efforts support NASA's broader goals, including expanding commercial opportunities in low Earth orbit and building the foundation for long-duration missions to the Moon via the Artemis program, as well as eventual missions to Mars. As Crew-12 prepares for their return, they will wait for the arrival of Crew-13 and a handover period before splashdown, with mission teams monitoring weather conditions off the California coast.
