A satellite is being renamed to honor a legacy of ocean science
In short: Naming a spacecraft is a rare honor, but the Sentinel-6A satellite received a special designation to recognize a career of planetary discovery. This move ensures that the mission to measure our changing oceans carries the name of the scientist who led the charge in understanding Earth's systems.
On January 28, 2020, a coalition of international space agencies—including NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), EUMETSAT, and NOAA—announced the renaming of the Sentinel-6A/Jason CS satellite. The craft's new designation is Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich. This title pays tribute to Dr. Michael Freilich, who served as the head of NASA’s Earth Science division from 2006 until his retirement in February 2019.
The Sentinel-6 mission is a critical component of global environmental monitoring. It is designed to provide high-precision ocean altimetry measurements throughout the 2020–2030 timeframe. To ensure continuous data collection, the mission utilizes two identical satellites: Sentinel-6A (the renamed craft) and Sentinel-6B. These satellites are scheduled to launch five years apart from the Vandenberg Air Force base in California.
Beyond individual recognition, the mission serves a vital structural role in international science. ESA is developing the Sentinel family to support the European Union’s Copernicus program, the EU’s primary Earth observation initiative. By replacing older satellites nearing the end of their operational lifespans, the Sentinel-6 mission prevents gaps in monitoring the land, atmosphere, and oceans while introducing new capabilities to study the planet's vital systems.
The renaming reflects a collaborative effort between the United States and European partners, including the European Commission and France’s space agency, CNES. It highlights a shared commitment to ocean science, a field for which Dr. Freilich held a documented passion and where his leadership contributed significantly to global knowledge.
