How satellites provide a global perspective on our vast oceans

Oceans and space · 4:14 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: While in situ water measurements offer vital data, satellites hundreds of kilometres above the surface are revolutionizing how we monitor the seas. This video explores how combining these perspectives helps us understand the systems governing our climate and weather.

The Earth's oceans cover approximately 70 percent of the planet's surface and are essential to all known life, playing a critical role in regulating weather and climate. To monitor these vast systems, scientists use a dual approach: taking measurements directly in the water and using satellites from hundreds of kilometres above.

The European Space Agency is expanding this capability with the Sentinel-3 satellite, which will join existing orbital observers. By integrating these satellite observations with continued ground-based measurements, researchers aim to achieve an even more accurate global perspective of our oceans.
