How a year in orbit helps prepare humanity for Mars
In short: After 340 days in weightlessness, Commander Scott Kelly and his crew return to Earth to share vital lessons on surviving long-duration spaceflight.
Footage shows the customary arrival rituals held within Russia's Star City at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre. Following their landing in Kazakhstan via the Soyuz TMA-18M, the crew—including NASA's Scott Kelly and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Volkov and Mikhail Kornienko—honored Yuri Gagarin with a floral tribute and joined a procession to the House of Cosmonauts.
The mission's true significance lies in the biomedical data collected during Kelly and Kornienko's 340-day stay in space. Launched in March 2015, their study of the effects of weightlessness on the human body provides the essential foundation for planning future human missions to Mars.
