Witness the ascent and orbital release of the Sentinel-1A satellite

Onboard camera view: launch and separation of Sentinel-1A · 4:47 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: This footage, captured by cameras on the Soyuz Fregat upper stage, documents the journey of the Sentinel-1A satellite from liftoff to its final release into a Sun-synchronous orbit.

Launched on 3 April 2014 from Kourou, French Guiana, the 2.3 tonne Sentinel-1A satellite was delivered to an altitude of 693 km. This mission marks the beginning of the Copernicus programme's satellite family.

Equipped with advanced radar, the satellite is designed to scan Earth's surface regardless of weather, light, or time of day. It serves critical environmental functions, such as tracking oil spills, mapping sea ice, and monitoring land surface movements.
