Could tiny mineral nanoparticles have been the engines of life?
In short: How did inert gases transform into the first living systems? While scientists debate models like the RNA or Lipid worlds, a new hypothesis suggests that mineral nanozymes acted as natural catalysts, driving a process called 'inorganic photosynthesis' to build the foundations of biology.
The origin of life remains one of science's most profound mysteries. Because the full sequence of events is impossible to observe directly and extremely difficult to recreate, researchers have spent the last century proposing various hypotheses. Many of these hypotheses, as noted by Dr., examine chemical evolution within space or on Earth. Natalia B. Gontareva in her ABC Net lecture series.
The prevailing scientific view considers the emergence of initial biopolymers and their constituent parts a vital turning point. However, no single theory has yet unified all aspects of this transition. Established models include the 'Metabolism-first' (FeS) world, the Zinc world, the Thioester world, the RNA world, and the Lipid world. While each offers insights, none provides a complete explanation for how lifeless matter became living systems.
A new framework proposed by Professor Yongdong Jin of Shenzhen University suggests that mineral nanozymes (MN-zymes) were the central players. These tiny mineral nanoparticles may have acted as natural catalysts and energy processors. Under primitive Earth conditions, these MN-zymes might have converted inert gases into complex molecules through 'inorganic photosynthesis.'
This nanozymes hypothesis assigns several vital roles to these minerals during the earliest stages of life's development. Beyond simple catalysis, they may have provided surface binding and confinement, protection against UV irradiation, photo-selection, and essential energy flow management. This suggests that life's earliest building blocks were not just random accidents, but products of sophisticated mineral-driven chemistry.
