Orion's assembly marks the first step toward returning humans to the lunar surface

Orion Spacecraft Is Taking Shape on This Week @NASA · 3:28 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: The Orion spacecraft is transitioning from assembly to launch preparations. This complex machine, featuring a critical European Service Module and four solar wings, is being prepared for missions that will test the essential systems required for astronauts to survive deep space travel.

The Orion spacecraft is currently undergoing a significant transition from assembly to launch preparations. After being built and checked at the Neil A. Armstrong Operations and Checkout Facility, the vehicle was transferred to NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems team. This handover is a vital stage in the mission timeline, moving the craft toward the Multi-Payload Processing Facility. In this facility, the spacecraft will be loaded with essential fluids, including propellant, high-pressure gases, and coolants, ahead of its journey.

Airbus led the development of the European Service Module, a vital part of the craft produced by European industry. This module is responsible for providing propulsion, electrical power, thermal control, and life-support essentials. These systems are considered crucial for the spacecraft's performance and the safety of the crew. During the Artemis I mission, the module's solar arrays were utilized to provide power, and for the upcoming Artemis II mission, four solar wings will provide electricity during the 10-day journey around the Moon.

The engineering process involves rigorous testing to ensure mission success. During the start of 2024, the craft underwent vacuum and electromagnetic trials inside a famous chamber from the Apollo programme. As the Artemis II mission represents the first crewed mission toward the Moon in over 50 years, the spacecraft must be fully assembled and ready for the next steps of launch. After propellant is loaded, the Artemis II astronauts will board the craft to check flight suits and internal systems, verifying readiness for deep space.
