Retrieving the future: How NASA plans to recover Orion from the ocean
In short: After deep space missions, how do you get a spacecraft back from the sea? This video explores the results of NASA's second Underway Recovery Test, showcasing the logistics required to bring the Orion capsule home.
NASA recently concluded its second Underway Recovery Test on August 4, 2014, off the coast of San Diego. Lockheed Martin, NASA, and the U.S. Navy partnered for this drill. Human Space Flight Support Detachment 3, a branch of the Department of Defense, partnered with them.
The primary goal was to evaluate both primary and alternative methods for recovering the Orion spacecraft following a splashdown. These procedures are critical for ensuring the safety of astronauts returning from future deep space missions. The first actual spaceflight test involving a Pacific Ocean splashdown is scheduled for December.
