Training astronauts to read the geological history of other worlds

Pangaea: exploring planetary geology · 10:04 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: How do you find traces of life on a distant planet? This video introduces ESA's Pangaea course, which teaches astronauts to identify critical geological features during future missions to the Moon, Mars, and asteroids.

Named after the ancient supercontinent, the Pangaea course prepares astronauts to locate significant rock samples and assess environments likely to harbor signs of life. The video features interviews with instructors and ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano during the program's inaugural session in Bressanone, Italy, in September 2016.
