The beast is waking: Alaska's Mount Spurr shows signs of unrest
In short: Located just 80 miles from Anchorage, Mount Spurr is a towering giant in the Aleutian volcanic chain. While it has remained quiet since 1992, recent seismic data suggests the volcano may be preparing for a significant eruption, potentially impacting thousands of residents with ashfall.
The Aleutian volcanic chain, a geological formation spanning approximately 1,550 miles along the northern Pacific Ocean, features Mount Spurr as a notable summit. As part of the "Ring of Fire," this region is characterized by intense tectonic forces that fuel some of the planet's most powerful volcanic activity. Standing at 11,070 feet above sea level, Mount Spurr is the tallest volcano in this specific chain, making it a primary focus for geological monitoring.
The urgency regarding Mount Spurr stems from a notable escalation in seismic activity. While the Alaska Earthquake Center tracks all felt earthquakes, the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) specifically monitors volcanic events. In April 2024, "Spurrquakes" began to increase gradually, leading the AVO to raise its alert level to yellow/advisory in October 2024. By March 2025, signs began pointing toward a likely eruption. This activity is often caused by the accumulation and expansion of magma and gas, which causes the volcano to "bloat and crack," creating shallow seismic signatures.
The potential consequences are significant for the nearby city of Anchorage. During the volcano's last major eruptive period in 1992, ashfall was severe enough to shut down Ted Stevens International Airport for 20 hours and impact populations across multiple regions. Because the State of Alaska believes an eruption could occur within weeks to months, emergency management agencies are currently urging residents in potential ashfall zones to take proactive measures to safeguard their homes and schools.
