How Europe tested its experimental vehicle during the Vega VV04 mission
In short: Watch the replay of the Vega VV04 liftoff from Kourou, French Guiana. This mission carried the Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle, or IXV, into space to test critical technologies for future European space exploration.
On 11 February 2015, the Vega VV04 rocket launched from Kourou, French Guiana, carrying the Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle (IXV). After separating from the rocket, the IXV reached an altitude of 340 km before coasting to 412 km.
The mission focused on testing autonomous flight systems and advanced technologies. Following its ascent, the IXV performed a high-speed glide through the atmosphere to evaluate its ability to withstand punishing reentry conditions, aiming to expand Europe's capabilities for space exploration.
