A new deep space survey aims to reveal the early universe's secrets
In short: Astronomers are preparing the GLASS-JWST-ERS program, a massive survey using the James Webb Space Telescope to capture some of the deepest extragalactic data ever recorded. The project focuses on two fundamental mysteries: what sources first ionized the universe and how matter cycles through galaxies.
The survey will use the telescope's NIRISS and NIRSpec instruments to perform spectroscopy on galaxies magnified by the Abell 2744 galaxy cluster. Simultaneously, the NIRCam instrument will observe 'blank fields' far from the cluster's center where magnification is minimal. This allows for a comparison between lensed and unlensed regions of space.
As this paper describes the survey's design and pre-commissioning estimates, it outlines the methodology and expected sensitivity rather than presenting final observational results.
Why it matters: This survey design provides the blueprint for studying the most distant reaches of our universe.
