The First Human to Walk in Space Recounts His Historic 1965 Mission

Russian Space Pioneer Discusses the First Spacewalk in History 50 Years Ago · 18:17 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: In May 2014, cosmonaut Alexey Leonov sat down with NASA to revisit the milestone of his 1965 spacewalk. This conversation offers a firsthand account of the challenges faced during the inaugural extravehicular activity and his later role in bridging space exploration between nations.

On March 18, 1965, Alexey Leonov exited the Voskhod 2 craft to become the first person to walk in space. His 12-minute excursion was designed to evaluate the functionality of his suit and his ability to move in a vacuum. This achievement preceded the first American spacewalk, performed by Edward White during the Gemini 4 flight in June of the same year.

Leonov’s career continued to shape space history, notably when he commanded the Soviet Soyuz 19 mission. In July 1975, he oversaw the first docking between a Soviet craft and an American Apollo vehicle, commanded by Thomas Stafford, marking a significant moment in international cooperation 40 years ago.
