How do we preserve the legacy of an icon like Sally Ride?
In short: When the first American woman in space leaves behind a lifetime of papers and personal effects, how do historians decide which fragments truly represent her? A new archival project explores the delicate art of curating the life of a national hero.
The National Air and Space Museum is currently examining the Sally K. Ride Collection, a significant acquisition of personal papers and belongings. This initiative, part of the Smithsonian’s 'What's New in Aerospace?' series produced alongside NASA, moves beyond mere data to explore the human element of space exploration. The project seeks to understand how historians and archivists capture the essence of a person's life, specifically focusing on a figure who holds such profound status as an American icon.
The process of uncovering Ride's story involves a collaborative effort between several specialists. Tam O’Shaughnessy, Ride’s partner and a biographer, provided the essential access needed for this study. She granted historians Valerie Neal and Margaret Weitekamp, along with archivist Patti Williams, the opportunity to study the collection. Their work involves analyzing how specific documents and physical objects can trace the entire trajectory of Ride's life, from her professional milestones to her private experiences.
Curating such a collection is not just about cataloging items; it is about interpreting the intersection of a single life with the broader social and cultural movements of the era. The researchers are looking for the tension between Sally Ride the public figure—the astronaut who broke barriers—and Sally Ride the private individual. By examining these selected papers and possessions, the team aims to reveal how her personal journey was shaped by, and helped shape, the cultural landscape of her time.
