NASA's Kepler spacecraft just quadrupled the known count of planets
In short: A major breakthrough in planetary science has revealed hundreds of new worlds. This update significantly expands our understanding of how common planets are in our galaxy.
Using data from the Kepler spacecraft, researchers have confirmed 715 new planets. This discovery nearly quadruples the total number of planets previously identified by the mission.
The findings are significant because they include worlds similar in size to Earth. Notably, some of these newly confirmed planets orbit within the habitable zone of their parent stars, where conditions might allow for liquid water.
