NASA tests new technology to land heavy spacecraft on the surface of Mars
In short: NASA is preparing for the second flight test of its Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator, a project aimed at developing advanced landing systems for future robotic and human missions to Mars and for returning large payloads to Earth.
The test takes place over the Pacific Ocean, utilizing the U.S. Navy's Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai, Hawaii. By simulating the extreme supersonic speeds encountered during atmospheric entry, researchers aim to validate technologies necessary for landing heavy equipment on the Martian surface.
The mission is scheduled to launch no earlier than June 3 at 1:30 p.m. EDT, following a June 1 press briefing that outlined the project's objectives for future space exploration.
