The final dress rehearsal for the end of an era

Shuttle Endeavour Crew at‪ KSC for Final Tests · 20:58 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: Before the final flight of the space shuttle Endeavour, the crew underwent a high-stakes dress rehearsal at the Kennedy Space Center. This terminal countdown demonstration test allowed the six astronauts to practice emergency exits and equipment familiarization, ensuring they were ready for the historic mission that would end a legendary era.

The Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test (TCDT) served as the ultimate dress rehearsal for the STS-134 mission. Arriving at NASA's Kennedy Space Center on March 29, 2011, the six-member crew—led by Commander Mark Kelly—participated in these simulations to bridge the gap between processing and practical training. The TCDT allowed the team to perform equipment familiarization and, crucially, practice emergency exit procedures on the pad before the actual liftoff.

This final voyage was a milestone for both the vehicle and its occupants. Endeavour, the agency's youngest shuttle, was preparing for its 25th and final flight. The mission was tasked with delivering the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-2 (AMS) and essential supplies, including two communications antennas and parts for the Dextre robot, to the International Space Station. For the crew, it was a historic transition: Mike Fincke was making his first flight as a veteran space flier, while Roberto Vittori became the last international astronaut to fly aboard a shuttle.

The mission concluded on June 1, 2011, marking the end of an illustrious career for Endeavour. During its operational period, the spacecraft completed 4,671 revolutions around our planet, covered 122,883,151 miles, and remained in orbit for 299 days. The final flight lasted 15 days, 17 hours, 38 minutes, and 51 seconds, successfully delivering the AMS, which continues to provide researchers with data on cosmic particles.

The mission also featured a unique technical test during its final days. After docking with the International Space Station and completing four spacewalks, the crew performed a test of the STORRM system (Sensor Test for Orion Relative Navigation Risk Mitigation). This automated rendezvous and docking system test was conducted by Commander Kelly as the shuttle prepared for its final deorbit burn and landing at the Kennedy Space Center.

The human element of the mission was equally significant. While preparing for the April 19 launch, Commander Mark Kelly was also supporting his wife, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, during her recovery from a gunshot wound sustained in January 2011. The STS-134 mission represented a final chapter of shuttle history, blending complex orbital maintenance with the finality of a legendary spacecraft's retirement.
