In short: NASA has selected 13 low-cost small satellites to serve as secondary payloads for the inaugural flight of the Space Launch System. These CubeSats will carry vital science and technology investigations to support future human missions into deep space.

The first flight of the Space Launch System, known as Exploration Mission-1, is scheduled for 2018. Its primary objective is to launch an un-crewed Orion spacecraft into a stable orbit beyond the moon to test essential systems for both the rocket and the spacecraft before any crewed missions occur.

These CubeSat secondary payloads are designed to pave the way for future human exploration, including the ambitious Journey to Mars.
