NASA selects small satellites to ride alongside the first SLS rocket flight

Secondary Payloads Announced for First Flight of Space Launch System Rocket · 54:22 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: This video details NASA's selection of thirteen low-cost small satellites destined for the inaugural Space Launch System flight. These secondary payloads will carry vital technology investigations to support future deep space missions, including the journey to Mars.

In February 2018, officials at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center announced that thirteen small satellites would serve as secondary payloads for the Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1). This mission marks the first flight of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, which is designed to carry an uncrewed Orion spacecraft into a stable orbit beyond the moon.

By testing the integrated performance of the Orion spacecraft and the SLS rocket, this mission serves as a critical precursor to the first crewed Orion flight. The small satellites on board will conduct science and technology investigations intended to facilitate future human exploration of deep space and the eventual mission to Mars.
