The Milky Way is rippling like a stone thrown into a pond
In short: Our galaxy is far from a static structure. New data reveals a colossal wave of stars rippling outward from the galactic center, shifting billions of stars in a mesmerizing, undulating pattern that spans tens of thousands of light-years.
Data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia space telescope has revealed a massive wave structure in the Milky Way. While astronomers have known for about a century that stars rotate around the galactic center, and since the 1950s that the galactic disc is warped, Gaia's precise 3D mapping has uncovered a more dynamic motion. This wave ripples outward from the center, affecting stars at distances of 30,000 to 65,000 light-years from the core—a significant portion of the galaxy, which is roughly 100,000 light-years across.
The phenomenon behaves like a physical wave, where stars in certain areas lie above the warped disc (indicated in red in maps) and others lie below (indicated in blue). Researchers have identified this motion by tracking young giant stars and Cepheids—stars with predictable but variable brightness. Because these stars move with the wave, scientists believe the galactic gas may also be participating in the ripple. It is possible that young stars simply retain the 'memory' of the wave from the gas clouds in which they were born.
The origin of this galactic disturbance remains a mystery. One leading hypothesis is that it was triggered by a past collision with a smaller dwarf galaxy, causing a massive shake to the entire structure. This large-scale ripple is distinct from the Radcliffe Wave, a much smaller ripple visible about 500 light-years from the Sun that stretches for 9,000 light-years. Scientists are now using Gaia's high-accuracy measurements of stellar velocities to determine exactly what sparked this ongoing galactic oscillation.
