Monitoring Earth's storms from 230 miles above our atmosphere

Space Station Continues Tropical Storms Watch · 4:42 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: Watch how NASA utilizes cameras on the International Space Station to track active weather systems in real time. This footage provides a unique vantage point of tropical storms as they develop and move across the globe.

On September 9, 2011, crew-tended and external cameras captured the progression of two distinct systems: Tropical Storm Nate and Hurricane Katia. At a height of 230 miles, footage showed Nate moving towards the northwest across the southern Gulf of Mexico's Bay of Campeche while gusts hit 65 mph.

The footage highlights the importance of orbital observation for meteorology. While Nate was projected to intensify into a hurricane and move toward the Mexican coastline, Hurricane Katia was observed moving northeastward across the open Atlantic with winds of 85 mph.
