In short: Watch a rare, high-altitude perspective of Hurricane Katia as it intensified over the Atlantic. This footage provides a unique look at the scale of a Category 3 storm from the vantage point of the ISS.
On September 6, 2011, at 10:35 a.m. EDT, external cameras on the International Space Station recorded Hurricane Katia moving northwest across the western Atlantic. The footage captures the storm as it strengthened into a major Category 3 hurricane.
At the time of the recording, Katia was packing winds of 125 miles per hour north of Puerto Rico. The storm showed potential for further intensification before shifting toward the north and northeast off the United States' east coast.
