A 29-hour orbital chase ends with a precise robotic handshake

SpaceX Dragon Commercial Cargo Ship Arrives at the International Space Station · 6:24 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: SpaceX's Dragon cargo ship recently completed a high-stakes journey to the International Space Station. Carrying over two tons of supplies, it navigated an orbital chase before being grappled into place by human hands and robotic arms, serving as a vital lifeline for science in microgravity.

The CRS-33 mission highlights the transition toward commercialized space logistics. Launched on August 24 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station atop a Falcon 9 rocket, the Dragon capsule carried over 5,000 pounds of cargo, including food and scientific experiments for Expedition 43. The arrival was a coordinated effort: Flight Engineer Samantha Cristoforetti and Commander Terry Virts used the station's Canadarm2 robotic arm to grapple the vehicle into the Harmony module's Earth-facing port.

Beyond simple delivery, these missions serve as critical testing grounds for deep-space exploration. Specifically, CRS-33 was tasked with testing 3D printing of metal parts and bioprinting tissue in microgravity. These technologies are essential for providing medical support and manufacturing tools during future Artemis lunar missions and eventual journeys to Mars. The research conducted aboard the station provides tangible benefits for humanity by proving these systems work outside of Earth's atmosphere.

The Dragon also plays a structural role in maintaining the ISS itself. It performs engine burns to counter frictional drag, a task historically dominated by Russian Progress vehicles. This becomes increasingly significant as Russia considers leaving the ISS consortium in 2028—two years ahead of the station's planned end of life. In that scenario, Dragon and Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus will become primary means of boosting the station's altitude.

The mission concludes in December with a splashdown off the coast of California, returning samples to Earth for analysis.
